Sweat lodge ceremony
What is a sweat lodge ceremony?
A sweat lodge is an ancient place of prayer, purification, and healing. Sweat lodges can be found all
over the world, including among Native American tribes in North America. The lodge is made from
willow branches bent in a specific pattern to form an igloo-like dome. The structure is covered with
blankets and tarps so that it becomes pitch-dark inside.
The sweat lodge ceremony brings us back to Mother Earth and symbolizes a rebirth.
The sound of
the drum, silence, focus, and prayer are all part of the experience. The heat of the glowing stones in
the darkness, the steam released when water is poured over them, and the focus bring us into
another reality. In this way, we easily connect with our inner wisdom.

How does a sweat lodge ceremony work?
The ceremony begins with the stone ceremony. Each stone is placed with an intention. The stones
are blessed with tobacco. The firekeeper (man or woman) tends and feeds the fire. The doorkeeper
ensures the safe connection between inside and outside. When the stones are hot enough, we enter
the lodge together.
The water pourer leads the ceremony inside the lodge. Once everyone has found their place, the
stones are brought in.
The lodge is conducted in 4 rounds, each connected with a cardinal direction. Each direction has its
own themes, elements, and totem animal.
After the final round, where you integrate your ceremonial journey, the door opens. One by one,
everyone may step outside—the moment of being reborn!
After everyone has rested, we close together, share a meal, and tidy up.
Symbolism of the sweat lodge
The sweat lodge symbolizes the womb of Mother Earth.
The fire represents the masculine principle, and the lodge the feminine. Their union takes place
inside. When the stones are brought into the lodge, the merging of masculine and feminine occurs.
By sprinkling the stones with water, intentions and wisdom are released. Our purity is touched, and
after shedding our old layers, rebirth takes place.
Every action within the ceremony is devoted. Truly everything that happens in the lodge reflects
something of the journey the participants make together. By becoming still, you can more easily
perceive these messages and recognize mirrors.
